Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Overview:
HMPV is one of the major sickening respiratory pathogens introduced in 2001. The main affected groups by this virus are children, the elderly, and immunocompromised persons, to whom it causes numerous respiratory illnesses. Recently, a case was reported in China about an outbreak of HMPV. Symptoms of this virus closely resemble COVID-19, raising public concern about healthcare systems.
History of HMPV in China:
HMPV has been known to be in China for several years now, and it peaks seasonally around the winter months. According to the recent surveillance data, the number of HMPV cases has increased; most of the cases were noted among children below 14 years old. This came much when all the other respiratory viruses like Influenza A and Rhinovirus were also on the rise. True to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, this outbreak has already captured headlines, and hospitals are being reported to be overwhelmed with emergency responses being plastered on social media.
Clinical manifestations of HMPV comprise the following:
These symptoms of HMPV may be mistaken for influenza or even for COVID-19. Fever, cough, wheezing, expectoration (the production of mucus), and dyspnea comprise some of the hallmark symptoms. Most severely affected are vulnerable subjects, where HMPV can lead to pneumonia and possibly serious morbidity from respiratory disease.
Transmission and Causes of Human Metapneumo Virus:
HMPV transmission occurs mainly from respiratory droplets that are secreted when infected individuals cough or sneeze. It can be achieved, as well, by touching infected surfaces. Usually, outbreak causes include:
Variation by season: HMPV often peaks in the winter.
Crowded living conditions: Increased transmission in densely populated areas or during gatherings.
Lack of immunity: Newborns and young children may present very little immunity to HMPV, thus being more susceptible.
Risk Factors:
More increased risk of severe illness caused by HMPV involves:
- Children under 5 years old.
- Elderly individuals above 65 years old.
- Immunocompromised patients.
- Individuals with underlying respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
Treatment of the disease:
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV nor any vaccine against the virus. Management of symptoms is hence the only therapy at present:
Hydration: To ensure that fluids are taken in sufficiently.
Rest: To facilitate the healing process.
Symptomatic relief: From using common medications to treat fever and pain. Should it worsen, hospitalization will perhaps be required for management with oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation if there is respiratory distress.
Way Forward:
As HMPV continues its outbreak in China, the health officials continue to closely observe the situation. Public health recommendations insist on hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing and wearing masks in crowded places to prevent the spread of the virus. Continued surveillance and research will provide insights into HMPV's epidemiology and guide future prevention measures.
