BSc. Anesthesia Technology:



BSc. Anesthesia Technology is a medical professional course, completing the course they will be medical graduates but not a physician or doctor. They are usually called anesthesia technicians. Their work may be under the guidance of the anesthesiologist, a doctor who given the appropriate drugs to cause anesthesia in the patient's body during medical procedures. The technicians may not be able to prescribe the patient but they play a very important role in hospitals equally important to other medical professionals. 

What Is Anesthesia?

Anesthesia in medical terms refers to a condition in which a substance or chemicals when administered into the body causes temporary loss of consciousness or sensation or awareness required for the surgical procedures. Anesthesia may be given in the form of gases or injections loaded with certain anesthetic drugs.                         


Type Of Course:

BSc. Anesthesia Technology comes under Allied Health Science courses.


Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility criteria for all the medical-related courses are literally similar except entrance exams.

To join BSc. Anesthesia Technology course one should have completed:

  • The candidate should secure a minimum of 55-60 percentage in 10th school and should be thorough with subjects like science. 
  • 11th and 12th- two years of pre-university college with a minimum of 55-60 percent overall and in subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology.
  • Clearing the entrance exams.


Admission Mode:

  • Government entrance exams.
  • Direct admission based on the merit of PCB %.

  • Entrance exam conducted by the private institution.

Fee Structure:

Government Institutions: 10,000-20,000 annually ($136.42-$272.83) in India.

Private Institutions: 1.5-5 lakhs annually ($2,050- $6,832) in India.


Duration Of The Course:

The duration of this course was 3 years + 6 months internship until the batch 2018-2019.

From the batch 2019-2020, the duration of the course is 3 years + 1-year internship.

Some institutions follow 6 semesters + 1-year internship.

Some institutions follow 3 years (Exams once in a year) + 1-year internship.

First-year Syllabus Of BSc. Anesthesia Technology Course:

1. Basic Anatomy (including histopathology)

2. Basic Physiology

3. Biochemistry

4. Pathology 

5. Microbiology

Additional Subjects:

6. English

7. State Language

8. Health Care


Second Year Syllabus:

1. Medicine Relevant To Anesthesia Technology

2. Section A Applied Pathology

    Section B Applied Microbiology

3. Applied Pharmacology

4. Introduction To Anesthesia Technology


Third Year Syllabus:

1. Clinical - Anesthesia Technology

2. Applied - Anesthesia Technology

3. Advanced - Anesthesia Technology


Final Year includes Internship Of 1 Year From the Batch 2019-2020.


Skills Required:




  • The graduate should be highly skilled in handling hospital equipment properly.
  • They should develop a habit of performing multiple tasks at the same moment.
  • The graduate should be a hard-working candidate as they are called whenever there is an emergency case even at midnight.
  • They should be intelligent in the subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, etc.
  • They should develop the habit of performing the tasks with care, as a simple mistake can lead to serious complications at the time of surgery.
  • They should have deep knowledge in pharmacology and loading the drugs in the syringe during surgical processes.
  • They should have good communication skills with the anesthesiologist and other operation theatre team staff.
  • They should be able to upgrade their skills with the new developments in anesthesia.
  • Anesthesia technicians should be attentive and quick during surgeries.


Post Graduation:

MSc. Anesthesia Technology: 

Ph.D. in anesthesia.

Salary Range:

The average starting salary for anesthesia technicians in India is 1.8 lakh-4 lakh ($2,460-$5,465) annually. The salary for starters is very low, but for the experienced technicians, the package is high. Permanent anesthesia technician in government hospitals has high salary ranges.

Certainly, the salary for anesthesia technician graduates is huge abroad like in Norway, California, Canada, Australia, New York, Dubai, etc. But requires a minimum of 2 years experience to work abroad. The salary range is increases immensely with the experience and is about $59,000 (Rs. 43,17,620) to $143,000 (Rs. 1,04,64,740) annually.
