BSc. Radiotherapy Technology:

BSc. Radiotherapy Technology is a medical professional course, completing the course they will be medical graduates but not a physician or doctor. The person is called Radiotherapist after finishing the degree. Radiotherapy is the major aspect of the treatment of cancer. This procedure is done using the machine called Linear Accelerator (LINAC) that uses ionization of high-energy photons into the targeted cells of the human body leading to the destruction of the cancerous cell and terminate their growth. It is mainly used before the surgical process to reduce the size of the tumor or lead to shrinkage of the tumor. It is also used after the surgical procedure to terminate the growth of remaining cancerous cells.

Radiotherapists may not be able to prescribe the patient but they play a very important role in hospitals equally important to other medical professionals.


Type Of Course:

BSc. Radiotherapy Technology comes under Allied Health Science courses.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

Completing 10th school and two years (11th and 12th) of pre-university college with a minimum of 55%-60% result in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).


Admission Mode:

  • Admission might be directly based on the merit of PCB %.
  • Government entrance exams.
  • Entrance exam conducted by the private institution.


Fee Structure:

Government Institutions: 10,000-20,000 annually ($136.42-$272.83) in India.

Private Institutions: 1.5-5 lakhs annually ($2,050- $6,832) in India.


Duration Of The Course:

The duration of this course was 3 years + 6 months internship until the batch 2018-2019.

From the batch 2019-2020, the duration of the course is 3 years + 1-year internship.

Some institutions follow 6 semesters + 1-year internship.

Some institutions follow 3 years (Exams once in a year) + 1-year internship.

First-year Syllabus Of BSc. Radiotherapy Technology Course:

1. Basic Anatomy (including histopathology)

2. Basic Physiology

3. Biochemistry

4. Pathology 

5. Microbiology

Additional Subjects:

6. English

7. State Language

8. Health Care


Second Year Syllabus:

1. Radiotherapy- Part- I A
    Fundamental Physics:

2.  Radiotherapy- Part- I B

3. Practice Of Radiation Therapy Techniques


Third Year Syllabus:

1. Radiotherapy- Part- II A
    Radiation Physics:

2. Radiotherapy- Part- II B

3. Radiotherapy- II


The Final Year includes An Internship Of 1 Year From the Batch 2019-2020.


Skills Required:

  • Radiotherapists should be highly skilled in handling hospital equipment properly.
  • The personnel should be attentive and quick during patient care.
  • The candidates should develop a habit of performing multiple tasks at the same moment.
  • The graduate should be a hard-working candidate.
  • They should have a deep interest in the subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, etc.
  • They should develop the habit of performing the critical tasks with care, as a simple mistake can lead to serious complications with the patient.
  • They should have good communication skills.
  • They should be able to update themselves with the developments in the radiotherapy departments.

  • M Phil In Radiotherapy Technology
  • Ph.D. In Radiotherapy  Technology

They can also do masters in other courses like:

The average starting salary in India is 1.8 lakh-3.6 lakh ($2,460-$4,920) annually.
However, the salary for allied health science graduates is huge abroad like in Australia, New York, Dubai, etc.
