What Is Meant By The Word Stress?




Stress is a feeling that is unpleasant to your well-being. It affects you in every possible way. It varies from person to person and irrespective of your gender, education, age, status, profession, rural or urban life, most of them usually face stress.

With the development and modernizing of society, the way of life and expectations of the people in these societies increasing and there are no limitations for their expectations. So people in the greed of wanting more, are prone to face stress when they fail to meet their needs.


Stress Is Basically Classified Into 3 Groups:

1. Pressures:

Pressure might in mentally or physically. People usually have internal pressure to earn more lead a luxurious life and increase their socio-economic status. Most people are hungry for name, fame, and recognition in society. For the sake of pleasing friends, family, relatives, neighbors, etc. may lead to stressful conditions.

To reduce such instances, try to earn for your basic necessities, for a healthy and happy life.


2. Conflicts/ Issues/ Problems:

In routine life, you will face numerous situations that may bring you conflicts, problems or, issues. For anything to do you have two options:
* Good/ Rights Things: They might be difficult to perform and not immediately fruitful.
* Bad/ Wrong Things: They might be attractive and give immediate benefits. 

Although you may choose one among the good or bad, you are not sure which is best. Everyone wishes to gain pleasant things and the least trouble task, even though it may be wrong. Thus, may lead to stress.


3. Frustrations:

Frustration is caused when we fail to fulfill our demands at an appropriate time. Frustrations and failures are directly proportional in our life. It is obvious to develop stress from consistent small failures and huge failures occasionally. When your beloved ones do not agree with you then you may face stress, when your know ones achieve, but you fail then again you develop stress.
It is depended on you, how you accept and face the situations, whether you smile or develop stress.


Effects On Physical And Mental Health:

1. Muscles And Joints:

Did you notice any changes in your muscles during stressful conditions?
Well, when you are stressed muscles may contract, you may shiver. You may develop pains and aches due to Prolonged contractions. Some of the common effects of stress are chest pain, headache, back pain, pain in the limbs, east fatigability, joint pains, etc.


2. Brain And Mind:

Sadness, anger, and fear are the negative emotions that trigger your stress. This in turn leads to issues like poor learning, lack of attention and concentration, slow decision making, feeling of discomfort, frequently angry, etc. This causes disturbance to your mental health. When you are stressed there is an excess secretion of adrenaline due to the hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal glands develop hyperactivity.


3. Lungs And Respiratory System:

You might have noticed that when you are stressed, your breathing levels alter and you experience shallow and increased breathing. Your neck region becomes red-hot, sense of chest constriction, and breathing difficulties.


4. Digestive System:

Stress also affects your digestive system from mild to moderate. It leads to nausea, vomiting, dryness of mouth, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrheas', indigestion, etc. You might lose interest in the food which you enjoyed earlier and even though it tastes delicious.


5. Genitals And Urinary System:

Stress causes an increased frequency of micturition (urge to pass urine), it also affects your genitals. Genitals play a very important role in your healthy sexual life. But due to stress, you might face premature ejaculation, abnormal penile erection, reduced sexual desire, poor sexual stamina, etc. 


6. Heart Beat And Blood Circulation:

Due to stress, the heartbeat increases. You might feel palpitations near your chest and neck region. There is an increased blood flow through your skin, sweat, and a feeling of warmth. But, reduced blood flow to the brain, sometimes prolonged stress leads to fainting and causes hypertension.


Complications Of Prolonged Stress:

Stress is the sole reason for most problems that you face in your routine life. Prolonged stress leads to increased risk of 'wear and Year' of the mind and the body that in turn may lead to complications as followed below:

1. Risk Of Addiction:

People under stress find various ways to escape from situations. They cultivate a habit of smoking and drinking more than usually they do. Thus, smoking, drinking, drugs, etc. become their routine as they provide them temporary pleasure and escape the stress. 

Stress doesn't reduce by such an addiction, but it just provides you pleasure for some time. If you want to get rid of stress, you need to find a solution for it and change your way of life to minimize the causes of stress.


2. Mental Disorders:

A person with prolonged stress may develop these disorders:
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Panic disorders
  • Depression
  • Phobic disorders
  • Acute psychosis
  • Hysteria
  • Somatoform disorders
  • Increases existing mental disorders, etc.
People with stress fail to indulge in any of their work with a lack of concentration and interest, which eventually increases stress.


3. Physical Disorders:

In comparison to normal people, people under stress are at the risk of developing various physical disorders like:
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Chronic Bronchitis and Asthma
  • Migraine and Headaches
  • Heart-related diseases- Myocardial Infraction (Heart attacks)
  • Acid-peptic disorder- Gastric problem or Hyperacidity
  • Chronic diarrheas' and Dysenteries- Irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis
  • Chronic Arthritis- Joint swelling and pains
  • Menstrual Cycle irregularities
  • Skin diseases- Eczema, Hair fall, Psoriasis, Allergic rashes, etc.
  • Certain Infection: Immunity in the body reduces and is prone to various infections:
  • Sore throat
  • Pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Tuberculosis
  • Diarrhea and dysentery, etc.

4. Risk Of Accident:

Yes, it happens because when you are stressed, you might have poor concentration, attention, inappropriate decisions, and, faulty perception increases the risk of accidents like road accidents, workplace, or home. But, people without stress are at least at risk of such accidents.
