What Is Thrombin Time?

Thrombin time test is a type of blood test used to measure the time taken for a clot to form when excess of thrombin is added to the plasma of patient's blood sample that contains anticoagunt.

Materials Required To Perform Thrombin Time Test:

• Test Tube (Vaccutainer)
• Patient's Plasma (Obtainted by centrifugation of blood sampe)
• Anticoagulant
• Thrombin
• Sterile Glass Stirrer
• Optical Or Mechanical Instrument
• Stopwatch.

Procedure To Estimate The Thrombin Time:

1. Collect te patient's blood in a sterile vaccutainer containing anticoagulant.
2. Centrifuge the collected blood sample.
3. Then separate the plasma from the whole blood of the sample.
4. Add human or bovine thrombin to the plasma sample.
5. Immedietly switch on the stop watch.
6. Then use mechanical or optical instrument to detect the clot formation.
7. Note the time interval between the addition of thrombin and the clot formation in the sample. This time is known as thrombin clotting time.

Normal Range Of Thrombin Time: 14-19 seconds.

Uses Of Thrombin Time Test:

• Thrombin time is used to detect the hemostatic process.
• It is performed as the alternate method in measurement of clotting disorders when activated prothrombin time and prothrombin time is abnormally prolonged.
• Prolonged thrombin time indicates low fibrinogen, high fibrinogen, or fibrinogen that's works abnormally.
